How to germinate Monstera Deliciosa Seeds

Monstera deliciosa propagation can be done by seeds, and germinating will take a few weeks. Seeds may be difficult to come by, as it can take anywhere from a year or more before mature fruit is produced by flowers, from the Monstera plant, in order to harvest the seeds. The small, pale green seeds also have a very short shelf life, unable to dry well or handle cool temperatures. Therefore, they must be used as soon as possible.

1. Seed Prep

Soak the seeds in warm water for about 30 - 1 hour to soften the shell of the seed.

2. Preparing your soil

There are multiple different ways you can plant your seeds, this is our way of doing so. Monstera seeds like a soil mix with lots of space for roots to grow. We like to use 1/2 standard potting mix, and a random mixture of perlite, bark pieces (such as an orchid mix), and vermiculite for the other 1/2. Mix together, before planting into each container.

3. Container and Environment

Monstera seeds like a warm and cosy environment. The ideal environment is a glasshouse. If you don’t have a glasshouse, you can make your own glasshouse, using a large clear plastic container (eg: 27L), and placing a seedling tray inside. Make little holes in the lid of the container ( eg: 6 - 12 total tiny holes in rows), to help the plants breathe. If planting in winter or a colder house, miss this step, and open your lid a little bit during the warmest part of the day, every 3rd day for your plant to get some fresh oxygen.

4. Plant the seeds

- Place about 3/4 of your pre mixed soil mixture into a seedling hole, softly press the mixture down.

- Place the seed on the soil, then spoon 2 tablespoons worth of pre mixed soil onto the seeds. Lightly press down.

- It’s now time to water! Water your plants till it soaks out the bottom (drainage holes). Wait a few minutes until most of the water has dripped off, before emptying the plastic glasshouse of any left over water.

- Once planted, make sure you place your make shift glasshouse in a warm place. Not in direct sunlight.

5. Germinating

Your Monstera seeds should germinate in about 10-14 days under good conditions. That means high humidity, and high heat.

- Make sure you keep the soil mixture moist (not soaking) at all times. This may mean, a small watering every 4-7 days. Do this until your plants are big enough to plant into a small pot, from a seedling container.

Enjoy :D
